Abstract

The analysis of 32 longitudinal bed profiles observed in Paraná River reach km 421-422 is presented. A total of 237 dunes were counted, of which: 71% have a height between 2.2 m and 4.2 m; 70% a length between 110 m and 210 m; 71% a steepness between 0.017 and 0.033. The average lee-side slope varies between 0.04 and 0.10 for 77% of the dunes and for 8.3% of the dunes this slope varies between 0.12 and 0.16. Average value of the ratio between mean flow depth in the cross section and mean dune height was equal to 6.8. The steepness of mean dunes shows a slight tendency to decrease with higher flow rates and with greater total dimensionless shear stress. The developed flow resistance predictor was applied in different rivers using a total of 285 hydraulic, sedimentological and morphological data points. The ratio between calculated and observed flow velocity ranged from 0.8 to 1.2 for 77.2% of the total data used. Likewise, the predictor was applied to build the relationship between water level and flow rate at km 421.5 of the Paraná River, which was contrasted with registered data, and successively was applied to reconstruct the discharges of the floods that occurred in 1982/83, 1997/98 and 2009/10.
